The Fourth Interdisciplinary Symposium for Emerging Scholars on India China Studies is part of the India China Institute’s ( http://www.indiachinainstitute.org) continuing commitment to build a community of scholars who are engaged in research that focuses on new and innovative approaches to understanding India-China. The India China Institute is a part of The New School ( http://www.newschool.edu), at the forefront of understanding and debating social and political issues worldwide.

Presenters selected for this symposium share a broad interest in India-China relations in a globalizing world. The symposium will provide a platform for a select group of early career scholars from India, China, and the United States to present their work and to participate in multi-disciplinary investigation and deliberation with distinguished scholars.

The first part, entitled “Flows and Exchanges” is a presentation of papers, presented by:

- Mary Bryna Sanger
- Jianying Zha
- Jingfeng Li
- Amen Jaffer
- Marina Kaneti

When discussing the work of each of the presenters, we hope to identify relevant methodological and substantive questions, and where possible answers, through a productive confrontation of diverse disciplinary perspectives. Relevant cross-cutting themes will include that of the role to be played by received and privileged spatial and institutional frames, such as that of the nation-state, in scholarly analyses within the field, and that of how to relate historical and contemporary concerns while avoiding anachronistic fallacies.

We hope that the symposium will provide a milestone in the intellectual definition and institutional development of the field, enhance the sense of community within it, and help to foster more productive directions for teaching and scholarship.
